Oyster mushrooms lower cholesterol like a natural statin

Mostly false

The Claim

Because oyster mushrooms contain lovastatin and beta-glucans, they are often described as a natural cholesterol-lowering food that works like a statin.

Origin

The claim is based on the discovery of lovastatin in Pleurotus species and on animal studies showing lipid-lowering effects.

What Science Says

In a double-blind RCT, 46 adults with moderately elevated LDL cholesterol consumed 8.4 g of oyster mushroom powder (3 g beta-glucans) daily for 4 weeks; LDL cholesterol, other blood lipids and apolipoproteins did not change compared with control. Only a post-hoc analysis suggested reduced cholesterol absorption markers, mainly in women. Current controlled human evidence does not support a statin-like effect.

Verdict

Mostly False
