All fiber is the same
evidence
The Claim
Many people believe that fiber is fiber — it does not matter what type you eat. Some think any fiber supplement or food will provide the same health benefits regardless of source.
Origin
This misconception stems from early nutrition guidelines that grouped all fiber together without distinguishing types. Food labels list "total fiber" without specifying soluble vs insoluble.
What Science Says
Research clearly distinguishes between soluble fiber (dissolves in water, forms gel, lowers cholesterol and slows glucose absorption) and insoluble fiber (adds bulk, speeds transit, prevents constipation). Beta-glucan from oats specifically lowers LDL cholesterol, while psyllium is most effective for bowel regularity. Different fibers feed different gut bacteria — diversity matters. A meta-analysis in The Lancet (2019) analyzing 185 studies found that health benefits vary significantly by fiber type.
