Plant-based algal oil can't match fish oil for omega-3s
FalseThe Claim
Many people believe vegans and vegetarians cannot get the same DHA benefit as fish eaters, because algae-derived omega-3 is assumed to be weaker or poorly absorbed.
Origin
The belief comes from the fact that plant omega-3 (ALA from flax or chia) converts poorly to DHA, which is often wrongly generalized to all non-fish sources.
What Science Says
Algae are the original source of the DHA found in fish, and algal oil provides preformed DHA (and in some products EPA). In a randomized study, 600 mg/day DHA from algal-oil capsules raised plasma and red-blood-cell DHA as much as the same amount from cooked salmon (about +80% and +25%). A 2025 double-blind RCT in 74 adults found DHA and EPA bioavailability from microalgal oil was statistically non-inferior to fish oil over 14 weeks.
